From: Bill Zak,
Architectural Model
This is a task that I use every
semester in my Architectural Drafting class.
The model is cost effective, challenging, and a nice change of pace from
drawing. I use the model after the
students complete at least their floor plans and elevation drawings. This way student’s
can get a handle on the importance of reference material because they are
always using them for measurements.
Because the
entire class does the model we use cardboard salvaged from food services. I let students know about foam board but if
they would like to use that then it comes out of their pocket. The only thing that I need to supply is the
scissors and glue. This is getting off
cheap considering the time some students will put into it. I will give the entire class a week of
dedicated time for the model and those who do not finish can work on it between
drawings.
Grading
considerations include; how well they follow directions, sound construction,
and how well does it resemble their elevation drawings. I have them turn in the elevations and model
at the same time and count it as one big assignment rather than two individual
ones.
